If something isn’t working, you have a question or you just want to tell us something, write to us at soporte@story256.com. We’re a very small team and we read every email; we usually reply within one or two working days.
Contact
So we can help you faster, include your username, the platform (iPhone, iPad, Android or web) and, if it’s a bug, what you were doing when it happened.
You can also send us an idea or report a bug without leaving the app, in Profile → suggestions. And you can read and write from the browser at https://app.story256.com.
How does Story256 work?
Every day you get 256 characters (more with Plus or Pro). You can spend them continuing a story, opening an alternative path from any fragment (forking) or starting a new story. Characters reset at midnight in your time zone and don’t carry over. Each fragment needs at least 20 characters, and they’re only deducted when you publish.
You don’t need an account to read. In every story you can read in canon mode (always follows the most voted path) or in explorer mode (you choose at every fork).
Can I edit or delete a fragment?
No. Fragments are links in a story that other people continue, so once published they can’t be changed or removed. Read it over before publishing: the counter tells you how many characters you have left. If you’ve published something that infringes your rights or someone else’s, or contains personal data, write to us and we’ll take it out of view.
“Someone is writing” and the queue
Only one person can continue the tip of a branch at a time. While they write, the branch is reserved for a few minutes. If it’s busy, join the queue: we’ll send you a notification when it frees up and you’ll have 90 seconds to claim your turn. If you don’t claim it, it passes to the next person. In the meantime you can always fork from any fragment without waiting.
If publishing tells you the story has changed, someone published before you on that same branch. You can read what’s new and adapt your text (nothing is lost) or turn it into a fork.
Streak
Your streak adds a day for every consecutive day (in your time zone) on which you publish at least one fragment. Miss a day and it goes back to zero. You can turn on an 8 p.m. reminder in Profile → notifications.
Subscriptions and purchases
Plus (1,024 characters a day) and Pro (2,048) are auto-renewing subscriptions: they’re charged to your store account when you confirm the purchase and on every renewal, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. “+256” is a one-off purchase that adds 256 characters to the current day and doesn’t renew.
A plan change can take a few seconds to show up in the app; if it doesn’t appear, tap “Restore purchases” on the plans screen.
Subscriptions are cancelled or changed from your store account, not from the app:
Subscriptions on Apple (App Store)
Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their own policies, since they take the payment. If you need help with a purchase, write to us anyway and we’ll try to point you in the right direction.
Notifications
We only ask for permission when it makes sense: when you join a queue, after publishing, or from Profile. If they don’t arrive, check that permission is granted in your system settings and that the matching notification is on in Profile → notifications. The queue-turn notice can’t be turned off (it is the queue). There are no push notifications on the web, but the Activity tab shows the same notices.
Reporting and blocking
From the menu of any fragment you can report it (giving a reason) or block its author. With three reports from different people, the fragment is automatically taken out of view until we review it. Blocking someone hides the stories they created and mutes notices between you both, in both directions. You can undo a block in Profile → blocked.
If you see something urgent (content involving a minor, threats, personal data), write to us directly at soporte@story256.com and we’ll treat it as a priority.
18+ stories
Stories with adult content are marked 18+ by their author and don’t appear in the feed or in search unless you turn on “Show 18+ stories” in Profile. A direct link to an 18+ story does open. If you find an adult story that isn’t marked, report it.
Name and profile picture
Tap your avatar in Profile to change your username (4–20 letters, numbers or underscores, unique) or your picture. Both are public and sign your fragments.
Deleting your account
Profile → “delete account”. Your email, name, picture, streak, votes, follows, queues and notices are deleted. Your fragments stay in the stories, signed as “deleted account”, because other people wrote after them. The action can’t be undone. If you can’t get into the app, write to us from the account’s email address and we’ll delete it for you.
Important: deleting your account does not cancel a subscription; cancel it first from the store.
Your data
You can ask us for a copy of your data or exercise any other right by writing to the contact address. The details are in the privacy policy; the rules of the service, in the terms of use:
What languages is the app in?
The interface is available in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German and Basque: the device language is detected at startup (if it isn’t one of those, English) and you can change it in Profile → “app language”. Stories are written in any of those seven languages, and in Profile you choose which ones you want to read in.
